CHAPTER 12

Fiona

I gasped and grabbed my friends, stopping them when I caught sight of the man heading in our direction. The guy looked like he was a rabid dog, ready to chew his own foot off to escape a trap. My heart lurched along with my stomach. Whatever happened to this guy was bad. Daniil had alluded to him having cancer. Could he be in the later stages?

I couldn’t get past the sallow look to him. I’d seen it in people fighting a losing battle with one illness or another. “Professor Stanelis? Is that you?” I asked in a low voice.

The professor stopped and looked our way. “Who else would I be?” He stared at us for several seconds. “What are you? You glow.”

My head jerked at that comment. I’d never heard anyone say that. My blood chilled at his words. Did he see our auras? That shouldn’t be possible. He must have found something at the ruins.

My hands clenched at my sides as I fought the desire to pat the good doctor down in my search for an Object of Power. “What do you mean by that? I don’t glow.” I looked at Aislinn and Violet. Neither of them looked any different than usual.

Professor Stanelis scowled and moved toward me. “Liar. Why do you insist that supernaturals don’t exist? They do. I know they do, and I’m close.”

Curiosity got the better of me, and I moved closer to him. “What are you close to? What did you find?”

“I didn’t find anything yet. Why are you asking?” The professor’s expression turned wary as he looked between the three of us. “Who did you say you were?”

I gave him my most serene smile and introduced the three of us. Normally, people dismissed middle-aged women, hardly seeing that we existed. I found it surprising that women my age were so overlooked in life by everyone, everywhere. It was the worst in a medical setting.

“What do you want?” Stanelis's energy was shifty and made me nervous.

This guy believed we were supernaturals and expected us to discuss that topic so that I got to the point. “We want to know what you took from Zeus’s temple here in Athens.”

Stanelis was like a frightened deer as he stood frozen, staring at us. Violet stuffed her hands in her pockets and rocked on her feet. “It’s alright, Vasso. We aren’t here to hurt you. We are merely curious. I’ve admired your work for many years. Your determination and persistence in the face of disbelief and disdain by your colleagues is admirable.”

“You glow bright orange and purple. What are you? Something like that one. She’s purple and green. And she’s just green. Are you all related?” The professor seemed to keep getting lost in whatever he saw in our energy.

I grabbed Aislinn’s hand. “We’re family. What did you find in Zeus’s temple here that led you to Egypt?”

Aislinn squeezed my fingers. “You must be excited about your discovery. I didn’t know Zeus even had a temple in that country.
